Most weeks, I listen to the Wonderland with DJ CheshireCat podcast, a freeform radio show on WESU Middletown 88.1 FM. Since I live far from Middletown, CT and go to sleep early, I’m grateful that they make some of their shows available as podcasts on iTunes. Last week, I noticed the first episode of the “Search and Recover” podcast while downloading the latest Wonderland podcast in iTunes.

“Search and Recover” airs from 3:00am – 4:00am on Thursday mornings on WESU Middletown 88.1FM. DJ CheshireCat is the person behind the computerized host, Mission Control, that picks a song each week and plays an hour of covers of that song. I enjoy covers, and when my life gets stressful, I sometimes find myself listening to the same song in repeat mode for the entirety of my 45 minute commute to work. So, when last week got a little hectic, I thought I’d listen to different versions of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for an hour.

After playing the original version by Nirvana, the show features electronic, swing, parody, barbershop, humppa, and Cuban takes (among others) on the song. The diversity of musical genres made the experience much different than listening to the original on repeat. Each of the 13 songs is distinct from the others but connected by the melodies and/or words of the original song. I didn’t know most of the words to the song before listening to this podcast (I agree with Weird Al Yankovic’s sentiments in “Smells Like Nirvana”), but I understood more of the lyrics after listening to different singer’s interpretations of the song.
