I’m catching up on posts. This is my pick for the fourth week of June.

In this episode of 99% Invisible, Starlee Kine traces the inspiration for the Geico cavemen commercials to the short story “Pastoralia” by George Saunders. But she doesn’t stop there. She asks George Saunders who inspired him (author Stuart Dybek), Stuart Dybek who inspired him (music by Hungarian composers Bartók and Kodály), and keeps going all the way back to Charles Dickens’ pet raven.

According to the path of inspiration Starlee Kline describes, I counted five inspirational degrees of separation between Edgar Allan Poe and the Geico caveman commercial. I liked this idea of tracing back sources of inspiration and George Saunders’ discussion of inspiration and the things that shaped him and his writing.
