Pick of the Week: Strangers – Jennefer Ludwigsen: Big Jim and Smokey Joe

Strangers – Jennefer Ludwigsen: Big Jim and Smokey Joe
Podcast release date: March 22, 2012
Time: 16:02

I learned about the Strangers storytelling podcast while listening to this week’s episode of The Moth (Jessica Lee Williamson & Don Ray Smith: StorySLAM Favorites). Jessica Lee Williamson’s story at the Moth was featured on a Strangers podcast in August. I’m always searching for new storytelling podcasts, so I listened to a few episodes of Strangers this week.

Big Jim and Smokey Joe is my favorite episode of the four episodes I heard this week. Jennefer Ludwigsen tells the story of how she meets Smokey Joe while waitressing and the discovery of a common interest in the P-51 Mustang brings Big Jim (her grandfather), Smokey Joe, and her together on an adventure in southern California and Las Vegas.

Lea Thau at Story Central started producing and hosting the Strangers podcast in December 2011, so it’s still relatively new. Unlike The Moth, the stories aren’t told in front of a live audience, but, like The Moth, they are told entirely by one person. Lea Thau introduces the story, sometimes with a story of her own, and follows the story with information about the storyteller, and sometimes a short interview with the storyteller. I’m looking forward to listening to more episodes from the first season in the coming weeks.
